Riverland Community College jumped out to an early lead and held on late to defeat Williston State College 7–5 on March 6 at Kino Sports Complex Stadium.
The Blue Devils wasted no time getting on the board, plating one run in the first before erupting for six runs in the second inning to take a commanding 7–0 lead. Riverland's offense was aggressive early, totaling nine hits and drawing four walks in the game.
Austin Swenson led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore outfielder Roland Figueroa (Ponce, PR) added a double and drove in two runs, while sophomore infiedler Peyton Ransom (Austin, MN) and sophomore outfielder Dylan Carlson (Edgeley, ND) each contributed RBI as part of the big second inning.
Williston State responded with five runs in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 7–5, but the Riverland pitching staff settled in from there to close out the game.
On the mound, sophomore pitcher Melvin Ortiz (Lajas, PR) earned the win, working 3.2 innings and striking out three. Sophomore pitcher Khalil Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) provided a key stretch out of the bullpen, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings, and freshhman pitcher Justin Joriman (Roseville, MN) shut the door in the seventh to earn the save.
Riverland's pitching staff limited further damage after the fourth inning, holding Williston State scoreless over the final three frames to secure the victory.
Defensively, the Blue Devils played a clean game with no errors.
