Behind a dominant complete game performance from sophomore RHP Riley Jax (Adams, MN), the Riverland Community College baseball team earned a 5-1 victory over Minnesota West on April 12.
Jax was in control from the start, allowing just two hits and one run over seven innings while striking out five and walking one. The freshman right-hander kept Minnesota West off balance all afternoon, retiring 25 of the 28 batters he faced.
Riverland provided run support early, breaking through with three runs in the third inning to take control of the game. The Blue Devils added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to extend their lead.
Offensively, Riverland totaled 12 hits on the day, with multiple players contributing. Sophomore 3B Raul Martinez (Santa Isabel, PR) and freshman 1B Carson Gehrke (Oregon, WI) each recorded two hits, while Gehrke also drove in a run and scored twice. Freshman utility Austin Swenson (Adams, MN) and freshman LF Hideki Ohira added two hits apiece, and freshman C Ethan Mott (Rockford, IL) contributed an RBI.
Sophomore OF Dylan Carlson (Edgeley, ND) also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly as the Eagles executed consistently throughout the lineup.
Minnesota West's lone run came in the seventh inning, but it was not enough to overcome Riverland's strong all-around performance.
