Riverland Picks Up Sweep on Day One In La Crosse

The Riverland Community College baseball team delivered one of its most resilient performances of the season on April 18, erasing a six-run deficit to defeat Western Technical College 10-7 and complete a road sweep.

After falling behind 7-2 following a seven-run third inning by Western Tech, Riverland responded with steady pressure at the plate before breaking the game open late.

The Blue Devils powered the comeback with timely hitting and patience, scoring multiple runs across the final four innings. A three-run home run by freshman utility Austin Swenson (Adams, MN) in the fifth sparked the rally, followed by a string of clutch at-bats and aggressive baserunning that tied and ultimately swung the game in Riverland's favor.

Freshman SS Christiaan Koehler (Red Wing, MN) led the offensive surge with two home runs and three RBIs, while sophomore 2B Peyton Ransom (Austin, MN) also homered and finished with two RBIs. Swenson added a three-run blast as part of a multi-hit performance, and sophomore CF Roland Figueroa (Ponce, PR) and sophomore 3B Raul Martinez (Santa Isabel, PR) both contributed key runs during the comeback.

Riverland totaled 12 hits and drew five walks, turning early adversity into a dominant finish.

On the mound, sophomore LHP Melvin Ortiz (Lajas, PR) started and battled through five innings, while sophomore RHP Khalil Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) worked two scoreless innings in relief to help stabilize the game late.
