The Riverland Community College baseball picked up a crucial win with a 6-1 victory over Western Technical College on April 19.
Riverland set the tone early, scoring in the first inning and steadily building its lead with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth. The Blue Devils controlled the game from start to finish, limiting Western Tech to just one run on seven hits.
Offensively, Riverland made the most of its opportunities despite only five hits. Sophomore OF Ben Helfer (Zumbrota, MN) led the way with a double and an RBI, while Freshman utility Ethan Doll (Fargo, ND) contributed a hit and an RBI. Freshman SS Christiaan Koehler (Red Wing, MN) added a strong performance at the plate, finishing with two hits. The Blue Devils also drew six walks and consistently applied pressure on the basepaths.
On the mound, Sophomore RHP Khalil Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) delivered a dominant outing, throwing a complete game while allowing just one run on seven hits. He struck out two and did not issue a walk, keeping Western Tech off balance throughout the contest.
Western Tech's lone run came in the sixth inning, but Riverland's pitching and defense held firm the rest of the way.
