The Riverland Community College baseball team closed out its series with Western Technical College on April 19, falling 14-7 in a high-scoring second game after securing a win earlier in the day.
Western Tech broke the game open late, scoring seven runs in the seventh inning to pull away in a contest that featured 32 combined hits and constant offensive pressure from both sides.
Riverland stayed competitive early, scoring in each of the first three innings and continuing to chip away throughout the middle of the game. However, Western Tech's explosive seventh inning proved to be the difference.
The Blue Devils finished with nine hits, led by sophomore 3B Raul Martinez (Santa Isabel, PR), who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Freshman 1B Carson Gehrke (Oregon, WI) provided a major spark with a home run and three RBIs, while freshman utility Austin Swenson (Adams, MN), Sophomore CF Roland Figueroa (Ponce, PR), and freshman SS Christiaan Koehler (Red Wing, MN) each added run-producing hits.
Sophomore RHP Peyton Ransom (Austin, MN) and frehsman RHP Justin Joriman (Roseville, MN) combined to handle the majority of the pitching duties, but Riverland's bullpen was unable to slow Western Tech's late surge.
