Riverland Picks Up Win Over Rochester

Riverland Community College used a strong all-around performance to earn a 7-1 victory over Rochester Community and Technical College in MCAC Southern Division action.

Riverland (29-12, 11-4) struck early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning when freshman1B Carson Gehrke (Oregon, WI) delivered an RBI single to score sophomore 3B Raul Martinez (Santa Isabel, PR).

The Devils added to their lead in the fifth inning as Gehrke came through again, this time with a two-run triple to push the advantage to 3-0.

Riverland broke the game open in the sixth inning, plating four runs. Sophomore 3B Peyton Ransom (Austin, MN) drew an RBI walk before Gehrke added his fourth RBI of the day on a groundout. Sophomore Dave Gonzaga (Santa Isabel, PR) followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 7-0.

Gehrke led the offensive attack, finishing 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Gonzaga added two hits and two RBIs. Martinez scored three runs and collected two hits, and Ransom reached base three times and scored twice.

On the mound, Sophomore RHP Khalil Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) was in control throughout, tossing a complete game. The right-hander allowed just one run on six hits while striking out four and walking one.

Rochester (18-14, 7-4) broke up the shutout in the seventh inning, but the Devils' early offensive production proved more than enough.

Riverland finished with 10 hits in the contest and played solid defense behind Fernandez to secure the road conference win.
