Derek is entering his eleventh season as head men's basketball coach at Riverland Community College. The Lakeville, MN native is no stranger to the Blue Devils as he played two seasons for RCC (2008-2010). Hahn returned to the sideline for the Devils in 2013-2014 working as an assistant under then head coach Scott Koenigs. During the 2014-2015 season, Hahn and the coaching staff led the Devils to a 16-11 regular season finish, which qualified the team for the regional tournament for the first time in seventeen years! Hahn was named head men’s basketball coach at Riverland in the spring of 2015. In Derek’s first season at the helm the Blue Devils finished 10-17. The 2016-2017 season brought great success for RCC. Hahn and his coaching staff guided Riverland to a 22-8 record (11-3 MCAC South – 2nd Place). The 22 wins set a previous all-time record at RCC for victories in a season. The Blue Devils defeated Rainy River in the consolation championship at the Region XIII Tournament 103-93. In 2017-2018 RCC finished 19-9 (10-4 MCAC South – 3rd Place). The 19 wins placed that group tied for third all-time on the wins list at RCC.
In 2018-2019 Hahn and his coaching staff guided Riverland to a 24-6 record (10-4 MCAC South – 1st Place). RCC was MCAC Southern-Division Champions for the first time since 1972-1973. The 24 victories set a new program record for wins in a season. The #1 Blue Devils made a post-season run in the Region XIII Tournament. They defeated Northland and Anoka Ramsey to advance to the Region Championship. Coach Hahn was recognized as MCAC Southern-Division Coach of the Year in 2018-2019. In 2019-2020 RCC compiled another historic year finishing 24-5 (11-3 MCAC South – T 2nd Place). Riverland was ranked for a majority of the season and got as high as seventh in the NJCAA National Poll. Riverland went a perfect 13-0 at home. In the spring of 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic Riverland athletics along with the rest of the NJCAA and sports world went into hiatus. There was a lot of uncertainty in the world going into the fall semester of 2020. The NJCAA allowed for men’s basketball programs to only compete in the spring semester of 2021 in a COVID shortened season. The strong support from administration for Blue Devil athletics allowed the team to participate in the 2021 basketball season. RCC compiled another very successful run in 2020-2021 going 16-3 (8-1 MCAC South – 1st Place). Hahn and the coaching staff guided Riverland to their second MCAC Southern-Division Championship in three years. Riverland won an impressive fifteen straight games during the year.
The 2021-2022 season was once again a historic year for Riverland. Riverland rewrote the history books compiling a 31-2 overall record (14-0 MCAC South - 1st Place). The Blue Devils won their third MCAC Southern-Division Championship in four years. Riverland was ranked in the NJCAA National Poll from the start of the year in the presason to the final poll that was released. RCC set a then program record tallying an eighteen game winning streak. The Blue Devils were tabbed the #1 team in the country on February 14th for the first time in school history. Riverland went on to make an impressive run in the NJCAA Region XIII Tournament winning all three of their games by double digits (Itasca - 38, Northland - 20, Anoka Ramsey - 12). The Blue Devils captured their first Region XIII/North Plains District Championship in program history. Riverland qualified for the 2022 NJCAA National Tournament in Rockford, Illinois. Riverland received the #1 overall seed in the twelve team tournament. RCC went on to win two games in the NJCAA National Tournament defeating the Onondaga Blazers (New York) 97-95 in OT to capture the program's first ever National Tournament victory. Riverland went on to finish 5th in the country defeating Community College of Rhode Island 77-75 in their final game of the season. Coach Hahn was recognized as the MCAC Southern-Division Coach of the Year, NJCAA Region XIII Coach of the Year, & the North Plains District Coach of the Year. The 2022-2023 season saw Riverland go 17-11 overall (8-4 MCAC South - 2nd Place).
The 2023-2024 season was once again a historic year at Riverland. Riverland compiled a 31-5 overall record (13-1 MCAC South - 1st Place). RCC set a program record winning twenty-one consecutive games during the regular season! The Blue Devils won their fourth MCAC Southern-Division Championship in the last six years. Riverland was ranked in the NJCAA National Poll for the sixth consecutive year in a row. The Blue Devils were tabbed as high as numer six in the country. Riverland went on to make an impressive run in the NJCAA Region XIII Tournament winning their quarterfinal (Itasca) & semifinal (Central Lakes) games making their third Regional Championship Game in program history. Riverland squared off with nationally ranked Rainy River eventually falling in a thriller 75-73 which saw the Blue Devils shot attempt at the buzzer rim out. Riverland qualified for the 2024 NJCAA National Tournament in Herkimer, New York as one of the four At-Large Bids selected by the NJCAA National Committee. The Blue Devils received the #10 overall seed in the twelve team tournament. RCC won it's opening round game in the NJCAA National Tournament defeating #7 Prince George's (Maryland) 93-78. In their second round game Riverland went on to defeat the #2 ranked team in the country Northern Essex (Massachusetts) 71-59. With the win Riverland made the program's first-ever NJCAA Final Four. In the semifinal game Riverland faced the hometown #3 Herkimer Generals (New York) and fell one possession short in a 72-69 loss.
The 2024-2025 season was once again a historic year at Riverland. Riverland compiled a 30-4 overall record (10-2 MCAC South - 2nd Place). RCC set a program record winning twenty-three consecutive games during the regular season! Riverland was ranked in the NJCAA National Poll from the start of the year in the presason to the final poll that was released before the National Tournament. Riverland was ranked in the NJCAA National Poll for the seventh consecutive year in a row. For the second time in school history Riverland was tabbed the #1 team in the country which is a position the Blue Devils held for three consecutive months starting the season 23-0. Riverland went on to make an impressive run in the NJCAA Region XIII Tournament winning their quarterfinal (Vermilion) & semifinal (Central Lakes) games making their fourth Regional Championship Game in program history. Riverland squared off with nationally ranked Minnesota State. Riverland qualified for the 2025 NJCAA National Tournament in Herkimer, New York as one of the four At-Large Bids selected by the NJCAA National Committee. The Blue Devils received the #7 overall seed in the twelve team tournament. RCC came out in their opening round game against Salem (New Jersey) and saw a double-digit second half lead evaporate falling to the Might Oaks 72-67. In their second round game Riverland went on to defeat national power Genesee (New York) 74-70. Hahn has had the opportunity to coach twenty-nine All-Division players, seventeen All-State players, ten All-Region XIII players, & three NJCAA All-American during his tenure.
During his time with the Devils as a player, Derek was known for his ability to shoot the basketball from long range. In his two seasons with RCC Hahn compiled a shooting clip of 41% (93/227) from distance. As a sophomore with the Devils Hahn was voted captain and at the end of the school year was elected "Male Athlete of the Year" at Riverland. After RCC Derek went on to play two seasons at Presentation College a NAIA school located in Aberdeen, SD. Hahn captained the Saints for his two seasons under Head Coach Jeremy Reigle. In Derek's senior campaign the Saints finished 15-10.
In the Spring Hahn is also the head coach of the baseball program at Riverland.
