In a tightly contested matchup at the NJCAA National Tournament in Herkimer, New York, Riverland Community College came up just short in a 67–64 heartbreaking loss to Dallas College Richland on March 12.
The game was competitive from the opening tip, with Richland taking a narrow 35–31 lead into halftime. Riverland responded in the second half, outscoring Richland 33–32, but couldn't quite close the gap in the final minutes.
Sophomore guard Tyson Helms (Tucson, AZ) poured in a team high with 15 points (5-9 FG) and dishing out four assists. Sophomore forward Joe Poyser (Wildwood, FL) notched a double-double with 12 points (6-7 FG), snatched a game high 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. Sophomore forward Tristan Coleman (Maywood, IL) also contributed 10 points & 6 rebounds. Freshman guard De'Vaun Suggs-Dabney (St. Paul, MN) 8 points. Freshman guard Cam Fearon (Margate, FL) 8 points.
Riverland shot 42.4% from the field but struggled from beyond the arc (31.8%) and the free throw line (58.3%), which proved to be key factors in the outcome.
Dallas College Richland was led by Andrew Huntley's 20 points, including five three-pointers. Dre Rutledge added 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Cedric Dent chipped in 14 points. Richland's efficiency at the free throw line (23-of-27, 85.2%) ultimately made the difference in the game.
